How to Fix Chrome Not Responding Issue / Error?

1. Browser Optimization

Browser optimization, which simply includes deleting browsing history, cookies and clearing cache is at times enough to fix the chrome-not-responding problem. Open Google chrome, clear cache, browsing history and cookies.

  • Open menu ( top right corner)
  • Click, “More Tools > Clear Browsing Data” or use the short cut “Ctrl+Shift+Del”
  • Check all boxes except passwords, Autofill form data, Hosted app data, and media license
  • Click Clear browsing data.

Restart the browser and check for any error.

 2: Cookie Clean Up

Websites that you visit leave some data with your web browser. This data is known as cookies. It records your preferences, browsing history and related information. This is used to identify the user when he/she visits the same website again. E-commerce websites often use cookies to show ads as per your previous views.

So cookie files are essentially redundant, from a user’s perspective. As the number of sites that you visit increases, the temporary memory that adds up due to cookies also goes up. This slows down your system. By default, Google Chrome allows cookies from all websites. But you can control this in settings.

  • Open menu
  • Click “Settings->show advanced settings“
  • Expand the “Privacy Section” and Click “Content settings”

 3. Close the non-responsive window

Sometimes, one or few tabs will get frozen. This happens when you open more than one tab in Google Chrome. Close the non-responsive tabs to fix the issue.

  • Go to More Tools and click on Task Manager.
  • All running processes will be displayed.
  • Hit end process on the chosen tab

 4. Disable the Extensions

Disable all the third party extensions. Reactivate it one by one Spot the one that is faulty and disable it permanently.

  • Open Menu
  • Go to More Tools and choose Extensions.

 5. Bad Proxies

Incorrect proxy settings could be a problem.

  • Open menu
  • Navigate to Settings->advanced settings.
  • Click “Change proxy settings” under the label Network
  • Click “Connections” Tab and click “LAN Settings”.
  • Check the box named “Automatically detect settings”

Generally, you don’t need to do anything with proxy settings. Verify if the data entered under the manual proxy settings are correct, in case you use external proxies.

 6. Turn Off The Sandbox Mode

  • Disable the Sandbox mode security feature because it can make your chrome unresponsive. Check whether the problem persists after disabling this feature.
  •  Right click on the Chrome icon and select “Properties”
  • Navigate to the tab “Shortcut”.
  • Append the string “-no-sandbox-” at the end of the target field.
  • Click ok.

 7. Run A Virus Check

Malware and virus programs can corrupt our files beyond repair. It is the same with browsers as well. Scan your system with an up-to-date antivirus program and keep your system clean. Doing this alone will solve 80% of your system issues.

 8. Fix Your Flash

You must have encountered the pop-up, asking you to choose between “Wait / Kill pages”. It happens due to the conflict that occurs between the Chrome’s internal Flash module and Adobe flash plugin. Chrome doesn’t choose one when both are enabled. Instead, it uses both and that is what leads to a browser crash. Hence, enabling any one of the flash versions to prevent this problem.

  • Enter“Chrome://plugins” in the address bar.
  • From the displayed plug-ins list, spot the plug-in “Adobe Flash Player”.
  • Disable Adobe flash player if it is enabled. Close the Chrome browser.

9. Clean Up The Local Storage

Open “Control Panel-> Folder options”

  •  Expand the tab named “View”
  • Under Hidden Files and folders, choose the option “Show hidden files, folders, and drives”.
  • Hit ok.
  • Now open the Folder named “Local Storage” by navigating through the path “C:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage\”
  • Data stored here are all unusable. Select all and delete.

Now re-launch the browser and check to see whether the issue is fixed.
